In the face of stricter regulations, higher taxes and outgrowing its current space, Meatheads Meats & Deli will move its meat-processing and catering to Bay City in September.
Dale Kruse has owned and operated Meatheads in Red Wing for 13 years and has been in this line of work for 38 years.
The offerings that Meatheads currently has weren't necessarily in a long-term plan for Kruse and company. They opened as a retail meat seller 2954 N. Service Drive, but now also are a cafe as well they cater events.
The business is getting larger and more popular, with Kruse saying they do upwards of 50 weddings a year and sometimes events for groups of up to 2,000 people.
Add in the more restrictive regulations in Minnesota and high property taxes, Kruse saw Bay City as a terrific option for growth.
“It’s very difficult to do business in Minnesota,” Kruse said. “I hear it all the time.”
Kruse has spoken with other Red Wing business owners, who agree with his viewpoints. Kruse said he’s reached out to state Rep. Barb Haley and Sen. Mike Goggin about the difficulties a business like his faces in Minnesota.
Meatheads has a solid following, according to Kruse, but going across the river will help in the long run.
One of the frequent requests is processing of wild game. A wild game carcass can’t be transferred across state lines. However, if a deer has its hide removed and is boned down, it can be transferred.
Kruse said Wisconsin provides a large customer base for wild game processing. Meatheads processes deer individually, rather than a mixing it other people’s deer..
Meatheads in Bay City will not have retail meat. The facility will occupy the former Woods and Water Building located on State Road 35.
